Maureen Solomon-Okereke Opens Up About Leaving Nollywood for Family: “I Have No Regrets”

Veteran Nollywood actress Maureen Solomon-Okereke has shared the heartfelt reason behind her decision to step away from the spotlight at the height of her acting career, revealing that raising her children was a responsibility she chose without hesitation.

For many fans of early 2000s Nollywood, Maureen Solomon-Okereke was one of the industry's most recognizable faces. Her sudden disappearance from movie screens sparked years of speculation, but the actress has now explained that motherhood became her top priority.

Speaking during an interview on Rubbin' Minds on Channels Television, Solomon-Okereke said balancing movie productions with caring for her growing family eventually became impossible. While she was able to take her first child to film sets, things changed after welcoming her second child.

According to the actress, although she had domestic support, she realized that her children needed her personal presence during their formative years. That realization led her to put her flourishing acting career on hold.

Despite the sacrifice, Solomon-Okereke says she has never questioned her decision.

Reflecting on her journey, she expressed satisfaction with how her children have grown and believes the time she invested in raising them made a meaningful difference. With her older children now adults and more independent, she feels the timing is right to return to acting.

The actress also revealed that she never completely disconnected from the entertainment industry during her years away. She continued following developments in Nollywood and says returning to the profession has been easier than many people expected, despite the industry's evolution toward streaming platforms and cinema productions.

Interestingly, Solomon-Okereke disclosed that her acting career began by chance. She recalled accompanying her sister to a hotel after checking her JAMB examination, only to discover that a movie audition was taking place. Encouraged to read from a script, she impressed the filmmakers and landed her first role without ever intending to audition.

She also addressed the growing influence of social media in today's entertainment industry, dismissing the belief that an actor's value should be measured by the number of followers they have online. In her view, talent and performance should remain the defining standards for success.

Maureen Solomon-Okereke's story highlights the difficult choices many working parents face between career ambitions and family responsibilities. Her return to Nollywood marks a new chapter in a career built on passion, resilience, and the confidence that taking time away for family does not diminish one's talent or future opportunities.
